SHORT FILMS SHOWCASE

Showcase films announced

Short films are the future! From music videos, to surf shorts, to dramas, documentaries, fine art, fashion and animation, short films aren’t bound by the rules of longer features. We ran an open a call to filmmakers from the world over to showcase their work; and we connected with our favourite filmmakers locally to bring you a programme of shorts across the festival. We are showing great surf shorts, championing local talent, telling female stories and showcasing surf, sea and hinterland in a kaleidoscope of styles that will guarantee to introduce you to something you have never seen before.
WHITE WATER - was filmed in the snow storms of The Beast from the East, with the soundtrack by The Starlings, a three piece band from Barnstaple & Torridge.
MAR - Daylight wanes as sky becomes heavy. Isobars compress and warp; cross-sectioned onions on the nightly news. The coast awakens, transformed from the doldrums of summer. Warmth; a flickering memory, like those drawn upon for favourable conditions at half-forgotten spots. The ocean roars, resuming it’s age-old attack on the coastline in a relentless barrage of storm fronts. And so the hunt begins, chasing the nooks hidden from wind and seas. Schedule revolves around brief opportunities, better described as optimistic hunches. A goading carrot dangled, and ever so occasionally within reach. Winter chasing shapes on the fringes of the North Atlantic. A collections of moments captured along the way. Mar.
AFTER THE STORM - In 16 December a huge Storm hit the coast of Portugal !
Andrew Cotton, Hugo Vau and Friends went at Nazaré to try to surf some of the biggest waves seen in recent years, a tuff call, with challenging conditions. Though the peak of the swell was unsurfable they did manage to snag a few early the next morning.
the result was this...
Surfers: Andrew Cotton, Hugo Vau, Trevor Carlson, Ale Marcianò, Marcelo Luna, Alex Botelho, Andrey Karr, Andrei Ovchinnikov, Zack Haynes
MY BIG WHITE THIGHS AND ME - A young-ish woman has fallen out of love with her own body. Frustrated, she wishes they didn’t have to hang out quite so much. It’s fair to say Hannah’s lumps and bumps have succumbed to gravity and are most definitely not locked into ‘youthful peak perky’. There’s no thigh gap left that she can post to instagram. Committed to making a change she sets herself the simple goal of swimming in open water at least once a month for a year. As she braves the elements throughout the seasons to swim in wild places she develops a newfound appreciation for this beautiful island of ours and the quiet adventure that can be found when we begin to explore.
CATAWAMPUS - A little girl gets lost in the woods during a rainstorm and finds shelter in s seemingly abandoned cabin. What could go wrong?
Catawampus is my Plymouth College of Art graduate film and is inspired by the fairy tales of Baba Yaga.
PORTENT - A young couple enjoy a romantic camping trip one weekend in Devon. But Tom and Ellie's perfect getaway becomes an absolute nightmare when they encounter a supernatural force whilst hiking across Dartmoor. Can they escape this wicked phantasm before it's too late or are they destined to perish just like Ellie fears? PORTENT is the award winning, dark and atmospheric No Budget production from the makers of YOU GET WHAT YOU ASK FOR SON, THE LOLLY RANGER, FIREWORKS and TORN: a SHOCK YOUmentary.
As featured on AIN'T IT COOL NEWS and Issue 41 of DIGITAL FILMMAKER magazine. The HIGHWAY 61 FILM FESTIVAL called it, " a nuanced and intelligent blend of psychological and supernatural horror."
BRICKS - “A morbid yet classy take on a morbid classic.” — David Fincher (Fight Club, Gone Girl)
"It’s not every day that a filmmaker like David Fincher shouts out a short film, but then again, it’s not every day that a director like Neville Pierce comes along." — The Playlist “Beautiful. Deliberate and creepy as hell.” — Scott Frank (Out Of Sight, Godless) Winner: Melies d’Argent, Abertoir Film Festival. When a wealthy stockbroker hires a rough builder to renovate the wine cellar underneath his country house, the two men fall out with chilling consequences.  Stars: Jason Flemyng, Blake Ritson. Directed by Neville Pierce, written by Jamie Russell & Neville Pierce, produced by Savannah James-Bayly, edited by Jim Page - with an original score by David Julyan (Memento, The Prestige).
LOSE MYSELF - Pattern Pusher are a local band from Devon. Dubbed 'sonic chameleons' by Music Must, they go beyond music, embracing all elements as a means of expression. Lose Myself is their latest music video, and features one of the bands Gran!
